Who Qualifies for the National Western Stock Show in Barrel Racing?

Denver takes 80 barrelr racers to its performances. Of those 80, 40 in 2023 were selected from the Qualifier event that was produced by the WPRA a few days before Christmas, and this is how the remaining 40 are selected.

  • Top 28 contestants from the 2022 Pro Rodeo World standings
  • Top 5 from the 2023 Pro Rodeo World standings based on winnings 7 days prior to the National Western Stock Show entries closing
  • The top 2 from the 2022 WPRA Tour
  • The top 5 from the 2022 Pro Rodeo Mountain States Circuit Finals year-end standing

National Western Stock Show Rodeo Barrel Racing Format

Barrel racing will follow the same format as the six PRCA events in Denver (breakaway roping is not included as an event in the National Western Stock Show Rodeo). Here’s the format outlined in the WPRA ground rules for 2022.

First Two Runs: The Performances

  • All events will have two full go-rounds. They will be ran in consecutive performances. So the first 16 performances will feature eight brackets of 10 contestants and contestants will run their go-rounds back-to-back (see schedule)
  • The top three in the aggregate on two runs in each bracket will advance to the semi-finals rounds.

Third Run: The Semi-Finals

  • The semi-final progressive round will consist of three performances. Each performance will have eight contestants.
  • The top four contestants of each semi-finals performance advance to the finals.

Fourth Run: The Finals

  • 12 contestants will compete in the finals on Sunday, January 22.
  • The fastest time of the finals will earn the title of National Western Stock Show Rodeo champion.

National Western Stock Show Rodeo Barrel Racing Payout

According to the WPRA website, the WPRA entry fee to compete in Denver is $396 ($375 entry fee and $21 Procom charge). Here’s how the payoff will break down in each round with the entry fees and $45,000 added money.

“After the 6% is retained for the WPRA, 45% of the remaining amount will be allotted for the first two go-rounds (22.5% for each go-round) and each go-round will play 8 places. 30% will be allotted to the semi-finals (10% for each of the three semi-finals performances) and will each pay 4 places. 25% will be allotted to the finals which will pay 8 places. There will be no average payoff.”
