Not only does the Colorado Classic Futurity and Derby feature $145,000 in added prize money and wonderful awards, the event happens against the backdrop of one of the most stunning landscapes in Colorado, beckoning top futurity trainers to Montrose, Colorado, June 16-18. Barrel Racing Magazine has gathered all the pertinent facts you need to know about the Colorado Classic Futurity and Derby, whether watching the elite competition in person or from afar.

WHO: Event producer, professional barrel and host of The Money Barrel podcast Kayla Jones and her husband Kreg organize both the Colorado Classic race and the annual stallion auction which funds the Colorado Classic incentive program.

WHEN: June 16-18, 2022

WHERE: Montrose County Fairgrounds in beautiful Montrose, Colorado.

DAILY RUNDOWN:

Thursday June 16, 2022

  • 8 am-10:30 am 30-minute ride sessions, 10 horses per session – reserve onsite
  • 10:30 am-7:30 pm Futurity exhibitions, start in draw order and each futurity entry gets their exhibitions in draw order. Times will be assigned. Additional purchased times and derby exhibitions are after this.
  • 6 pm is the deadline to substitute or buy out futurity/maturity spots. Must be checked in at the office by this time as well, any and all rollovers must also be complete by this time for futurity and maturity contestants. Friday
  • 5 pm DO NOT MISS the Colorado Classic Contestant Reception sponsored by BarrelRacing.com.

Friday, June 17, 2022

  • 7 am-8 am – 60 exhibitions will be sold at the gate starting at 7 am.
  • 9 am – Start of the first round of the Futurity
  • 30-minute break following the Futurity before the start of the first round of the Maturity
  • Exhibitions will be held for open contestants, time permitting
  • Not before 3 pm – $1,000-added MVP Open 4D

Saturday June 18, 2022

  • 7 am-8 am – 60 exhibitions will be sold at the gate starting at 7 am.
  • 9 am – Second go-round of the Futurity will run in reverse draw order
  • 30-minute break before the start of the second round of the Maturity, which also runs in reverse draw order
  • Awards and checks will not be ready until 45 minutes after the conclusion of the maturity. Pictures with champions will be taken in the arena at this time
  • Not Before 3 pm – $1000-added Great West Trailer and Truck Open 4D
